Research Workshops

Multi-dimensional measurements of government (in)stability

organized by The Israel Science Foundation (ISF), the Western Galilee College and the school of Political Science, Government and International Affairs, Tel-Aviv University

May 14 -16, 2023, Akko, Israel

The workshop was structured around three topics: government longevity—its determinants and consequences; change in government personnel: how prime ministers' and ministers' tenure affect government stability; towards a broader conceptualization of government stability: how multidimensional government stability affects policy outcomes. The workshop presented the work of the Israel Science Foundation grant on that topic, [co-PI: Yael Shomer and Osnat Akirav; collaborator: Bjorn Erik Rasch], and engaged Israeli and international scholars who work on related issues.

This workshop examines how parliaments organize to maximize governmental efficiency as well as their ability to keep coalition governments together. What are the internal and external institutional determinants that shape legislative coalition management and help increase the coalition’s legislative capacity? Does this institutional structure vary across countries? These questions and more will be examined by workshop participants. Participants include researchers mainly from the United States and Europe who will present studies on a range of related topics including: the internal organization of parliament, parliamentarism and coalition management, the coalition’s ability to shape the legislative agenda and much more.
